  1. I just found your blog and I really enjoy it. I have been very interested in food costs lately. I recently did a comparison between prices at Aldi and Giant eagle and the result was amazing to me. http://budgetconfidential.blogspot.com/2010/12/price-comparision-aldi-vs-regular.html

I am really impressed that you can feed your family on less than $30 a week.

A friend refered me to your website and I love it! Last year I volunteered on an organic farm teaching students about nutrition and the entire experience changed my perspective on eating. Now that I’m a full time teacher working with students (typically parents) who have dropped out of school I’ve been trying to think of some way to help my students understand healthy eating. My idea was to plan a healthy menu for the week, along with recipes, that would add up to a reasonable price (yet still be nutritious and organic). I KNOW it’s possible (and now have further proof based on your blog) but it’ll be a hard sell to students who have to ask me if spinach is healthy. A question though, have you ever recorded your week in terms of what you’ve eaten each day? Also, does your food budget cover breakfast, lunch and dinner? Right now my husband and I spend probably a lot more than $30 a week, although we rarely buy packaged food. We live in Boston so I would expect prices to be somewhat similar.

      Hi Bethany,

Glad you’re enjoying our blog! We have done many posts on “what we ate for the week” in order to answer questions much like yours. Take a look at our old posts and let me know if that helps, if not, I would be happy to email with you in order to talk more!

It must jsut be my bad eyes.. BUT…. I enjoy your receipt post more when you type them. I am sure that is more work though. I just have a REALLY hard time reading them when you scan the receipt. But again I have really bad eyes….

I love the idea of feeding my family of three on $30 a week. It can be done and I think most people waste of a lot of food. Thanks so much for all of the information!!
