This Week’s Haul

Haven’t had time to do much grocery shopping and have been living off of chili, soups, homemade bread, oatmeal, oatmeal scones, quinoa and eggs. Realizing that we really do need some greens, I went to Chinatown early this morning and snagged some gorgeous vegetables.

  • 2 pounds baby bok choy
  • 1 bunch asparagus
  • 1 pound sprouts
  • 2 (large) Japanese sweet potatoes
  • pressed tofu

TOTAL: $7.15

    those veggies would be at least double that in the ‘burbs of buffalo, ny.

    Frankly, the economics of the NYC Chinatown produce markets are far beyond my comprehension – I always have a feeling like there could be something sketchy going on to make those veggies so cheap…like…maybe they are the things that can’t get sold at the larger produce wholesalers? Or they fell of the back of a truck.

      I got the veggies from a store front place. Sometimes I think its sketchy, other times, I think that chef’s shop in Chinatown AND hundreds and hundreds of people buy the same stuff and are OK.

    Actually, it probably has a lot to do with the fact that the rent for ten square feet of Chinatown sidewalk is somewhat lower than for a storefront.

    i think it’s the crazy volume they sell…the stuff isn’t in coolers…it’s just laid out…they sell those stacks before the end of the day
