Food Purchase Update

Spent .99 on a loaf of bread from the Coop on Wednesday and just spend 3.50 on orange juice (on sale) and a dozen eggs.  So our total for the week, so far (barring the infamous bourbon pour): $26.25

With some of those eggs, I made a lovely omelet for breakfast this morning.  Garlic scapes are my new favorite thing.

I enjoy your blog a lot and linked to it from mine!

What sort of omelet pan do you use? I’ve been avoiding non-stick pans, but I find it really hard to cook omelets (or really, any egg dish) in cast-iron or stainless pans, since they tend to stick to the pans. Omelets are the worst, since by pulling the omelet sides away to let the uncooked eggs run below, I disturb the butter and let the eggs come into contact with the cooking surface.

I used a non-stick pan (I think) on this one, but I have made omelets with a cast iron pan. Ours is REALLY well seasoned, which is the key. Maybe try re-seasoning yours?

  4. Can you write a little about how you cook the scapes? I keep seeing them at the Markets and are intrigued, but also a little intimidated. Thanks!

Heya. We usually just slice em on the diagonal and sautee the scapes with olive oil, salt and pepper. You can throw them in salads, pasta, risotto, sandwiches, whatever needs a little extra garlic flavor.
