New Feature: Smart Cookbook Cooking

Starting this weekend, I will be taking a recipe out of one of my cookbooks and trying it out with the groceries bought on the $30/week budget.  I got a slew of new cookbooks as gifts and really need to push myself to use them.  For instance, I got the excellent Michael Roux book, Eggs, and started drooling over the recipes last night while reading in bed.  Note: Do not read cookbooks with excellent food photography before going to sleep – you will get hungry.  This morning I made a boiled egg using his method and wow.  When I removed the shell at work (under a tap of cold-running water, per his recommendation) and opened the egg on top of some oatmeal, I had a perfect yolk that was slightly runny in the middle.  I am definitely excited to try more of his recipes and since eggs are a cheap source of protein, we always buy them and they’re in the fridge.  This book is highly recommended, but later this weekend I’ll post something up that is more interesting than a boiled egg.

Did you get any good cookbooks over the holidays that you are psyched to try out?

I didn’t get any cookbooks over the holidays, but I have a backlog that I’ve bought and haven’t used yet (I have a bit of a problem…). I’m looking forward to trying Veganomicon and How to Cook Everything Vegetarian. (And I’m giving myself an after-Christmas present of The Bread Baker’s Apprentice!)

Hey Melinda, I got Veganomicon for Christmas and know Isa from Punk Rock Kitchen – very excited to try some of those as well. How to Cook Everything Vegetarian is the book I tell everyone to buy. It really is the best overall book on vegetarian cooking. Let us know what you end up making!

I’m glad to hear the Bittman book is so useful – I do find a ton of stuff in there I want to make every time I page through it.

I look forward to seeing how you like Veganomicon as well!
