Scallion & Cheddar Scones

These were whipped up pretty quickly this morning from Bittman’s How to Cook Everything Vegetarian.  Made a couple of changes as the use of cheddar required more flour than expected.  This makes 6 large scones (or are they biscuits?).

Emergen-C! Poll Results

A week and a half ago, I posted up our receipt and a poll as to whether or not we should be counting Emergen-C packets as part of the grocery receipt. The results are in and it turns out that 72% of our readers clicked on the second option: “No. You guys need to [...]

Grapefruit Sorbet in Tuile Cups

This was the dessert I made for one of our dinner parties and it’s part of the Daring Baker’s Challenge.
I need to include this language for their checkers:
This month’s challenge is brought to us by Karen of Bake My Day and Zorra of 1x umruehren bitte aka Kochtopf. They have chosen Tuiles from The Chocolate [...]

Fresh Produce of the Month: Cabbage

This month, Phil and I decided to do one of the challenges listed on Is my Blog Burning? The challenge was to utilize cabbage, of which I am a huge fan.  Instead of relying on a recipe from a cookbook, we attempted to come something on our own.  The result, while not our greatest food [...]

Maybe Not…

Phil came home sick today, so no big and crazy dinner.  I had already started the rice balls when he got home, so here is a lovely picture of them.  They are very tasty!  I must thank Maangchi for her excellent video tutorial on how to make these.  An important note: make sure you don’t [...]

Lunch: Tina’s mom took her out to lunch. Phil nibbled here and there while working on a variety of non-food-related projects at home.
Dinner: We made a dish with tempeh and kasha, which [...]

Caramelized Onion Soup in a Homemade Bread Bowl

Here’s the recipe for the caramelized onion soup we served at that dinner party a couple days ago. I think that you might normally reserve bread bowls for thicker, pureed soup so that the soup doesn’t soak right through the bowl, but this un-blended soup worked just fine. In fact it sort of [...]

What We Ate on Friday

I haven’t had my coffee yet, so this is brief:

Breakfast: Toast (via homemade bread) and a hardboiled egg
Lunch: Caramelized Onion Soup (from Thursday’s supper)
Snack: Tina ate an apple
Dinner: Cheese and Yves Veggie Bratwurst Sandwiches on Homemade Bread; White Bean Soup w/Carrots and Parsely Puree (I mixed the white beans left over from the white bean [...]
